Employers’ Liability Insurance
Who Needs Employers’ Liability Insurance?
It is a legal requirement for businesses, individuals, or any entity that employs others to have Employers’ Liability insurance in place. The policy must provide a minimum of £5,000,000 in coverage.
This requirement was established under The Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, which mandates that nearly all employers hold sufficient insurance to cover compensation claims made by employees in the event of injury or illness at work.

Who Doesn’t Require Employers’ Liability Cover?
There are specific exemptions to the legal requirement for Employers’ Liability insurance, including:
Small, family-run businesses where all employees are closely related to the business owner (e.g., parent, child, or siblings). However, this exemption does not apply if the business is a limited company.
Limited companies where the sole employee holds at least 51% of the company’s shares.
Certain government departments and agencies.
